IEC 61537 is an international standard on cable management. The current edition is IEC 61537:2023, titled Cable management – Cable tray systems and cable ladder systems.

Overview of IEC 61537

IEC 61537:2023 specifies requirements and tests for cable tray systems and cable ladder systems intended to support and provide space for cables, and possibly other electrical equipment, in power and/or communication installations. Where needed, cable tray or cable ladder systems may also be used to group cables together.

This document does not apply to conduit systems, cable trunking systems, or cable ducting systems, nor to any current-carrying components.

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2006, and constitutes a technical revision. Compared with the previous edition, this edition includes the following significant technical changes:

  • new, relocated, and renumbered figures and data;
  • revised classification for corrosion resistance;
  • revised safe working load (SWL) test types and procedures;
  • new tests for longitudinal deflection in both horizontal and vertical runs;
  • testing of support accessories: brackets, hangers, C-shaped ceiling supports, and ladder systems;
  • new and revised annexes, including guidance on using the tray itself as a protective earthing conductor.

The standard is published in two languages, English and French, and runs to 305 pages.
