Powder-coated cable trunking is formed steel cable trunking finished with an electrostatic powder coating. It is used to contain, protect and organise electrical cable routes in buildings. Compared with uncoated trunking, the coating provides a uniform colour, protects the steel surface and delivers a clean appearance.
The Sun manufactures powder-coated cable trunking to project dimensions, thicknesses and colours for factories, buildings, shopping centres, offices and industrial electrical systems.
The Sun is a direct cable-trunking manufacturer and fabricates to project specifications and drawings.
1. What is powder-coated cable trunking?
It is a type of enclosed cable trunking with a box-shaped body, normally supplied with a cover. It is fabricated from sheet steel, surface-treated and powder-coated to the required colour.
Its basic components include:
- Trunking body: contains and protects cable routes.
- Cover: limits dust and outside mechanical contact.
- Joints: connect trunking lengths into a continuous route.
- Fittings: horizontal, up and down bends, tees, crosses and other direction changes.
- Powder coating: provides the finished steel surface and colour options.
It is suitable where a neat, colour-coordinated cable system with good protection is required in an appropriate environment.

2. Why use powder-coated cable trunking?
Cable protection and organisation
The trunking body and cover keep cable routes together and reduce scattered wiring or exposure to surrounding conditions. For routes with many cables, inspections, additions and replacements are more convenient than unmanaged wiring.
Improved appearance
A key advantage is the consistent colour and finished surface. Colours can follow the design or a system-identification convention, making this product common in technical areas of buildings, factories and commercial projects.
Protective coating
The powder coating protects the steel surface under normal service conditions. Actual corrosion resistance depends on the substrate, pretreatment, coating quality and installation environment; it is not a universal substitute for hot-dip galvanising in outdoor or highly corrosive locations.

3. Suitable applications
Powder-coated trunking is generally suited to stable, especially indoor, cable routes.
Factories and plants
For power, control and equipment electrical cables.
Buildings and shopping centres
For cable routes in technical floors, ceilings and areas with many services.
Offices and commercial projects
The finished surface and colour choice support architectural appearance requirements.
Indoor electrical systems
Where cables are not regularly exposed to water, salt spray or strong chemicals, it is a widely used, economical finished-surface option.
4. Powder-coat colours
The Sun can manufacture common colours including RAL 7032, RAL 7035, RAL 9001, RAL 6018, RAL 5005, RAL 3020, RAL 2004, RAL 7000 and RAL 9017. Project-specific colours, system-identification conventions or architectural requirements can also be followed.
Should several colours be used?
Not necessarily. Use colours according to each project; one consistent colour suits systems without a separate requirement, while specified systems or zones can be manufactured in their required colours.
5. Technical specifications
Dimensions are selected from cable quantity and size, future expansion and route load—not from one universal standard.
| Specification | Manufacturing option |
|---|---|
| Product | Powder-coated cable trunking |
| Form | Enclosed trunking, with optional cover |
| Base material | Sheet steel |
| Surface | Powder coating |
| Standard length | 2.5 m/length |

Common sizes: 100×50, 200×50, 100×100, 200×100, 300×100 and 400×100 mm. The Sun also manufactures project-specific sizes.

6. Selecting trunking thickness
Do not select thickness from trunking dimensions alone. Consider width and height, total cable weight, support spacing and type, horizontal or vertical routing, future capacity, and transport and installation conditions. A 100 mm trunking with a light load has different needs from a 400 mm trunking carrying power cables. For large or heavily loaded routes, determine thickness with support spacing and design load.
7. Comparison with other trunking materials
No material is ideal for every project; choose according to the environment and technical requirements.
| Type | Key characteristic | Typical environment |
|---|---|---|
| Powder-coated | Attractive surface, many colours, economical | Indoors, factories, buildings |
| Pre-galvanised steel | Low cost, easy fabrication | Suitable indoor environments |
| Hot-dip galvanised | Strong corrosion resistance | Outdoor and harsh environments |
| Stainless steel 304/316 | High corrosion resistance, easy cleaning | Food, chemical and demanding areas |
| Aluminium | Lightweight, good corrosion resistance | Projects requiring lower weight |
8. Manufacturing process at The Sun
As a direct manufacturer, The Sun controls fabrication and finishing at its factory: blank cutting → punching/cutting to size → press forming → surface treatment → powder coating → inspection → packing. Forming controls the body shape and accuracy; the finished coating is checked for appearance and uniformity before packing.
9. Quality inspection before delivery
Visual inspection is important before dispatch. Checks can include width, height and length; material thickness; body shape and accuracy; coating condition, colour and uniformity; holes, connection tabs and drawing details; and quantity/specification before packing. Project orders may be checked against agreed technical and acceptance documents.
10. Packing and delivery
After inspection, trunking is bundled to suit the product and transport method. Protecting the powder-coated surface during transport is especially important to limit impact scratches.

11. Powder-coated cable trunking quotation
Price depends mainly on W×H dimensions, material thickness, cover requirement, paint colour, fittings, quantity, drawing-based fabrication, order timing and raw-material movements. The same dimensions may therefore have different prices.

13. Frequently asked questions
Where is it used?
Typically in factories, buildings, shopping centres, offices and indoor technical areas.
What colours are available?
Many colours can be selected from the powder-coat chart, including RAL 7032, 7035, 9001, 7000 and 9017, according to project requirements.
Does it resist rust?
The coating protects steel, but corrosion performance depends on the material system and environment. For outdoor or highly corrosive conditions, consider hot-dip galvanising, stainless steel or another suitable finish.
Can it be made to drawings?
Yes. The Sun fabricates to the project’s size, thickness and technical requirements.
Is a cover available?
It can be made with or without a cover to suit the system design.
Powder coating or hot-dip galvanising?
Choose powder coating for mainly indoor routes where colour, appearance and cost are important. For outdoor, wet or highly corrosive locations, consider hot-dip galvanising or a more suitable material.
